John L. Highberger, age 86, of Wilmington, DE, passed away at home on September 13, 2017.

Mr. Highberger was a graduate of Oakwood Friends School and proudly served in the U.S. Navy aboard the US Intrepid. He worked for many years as a lifeguard at the Jewish Community Center. He retired from Sears as a salesman.

Throughout the years, Mr. Highberger volunteered at Mary Campbell Center and Hagley Museum. He particularly enjoyed bartending at the Grand Opera House for nearly 30 years. He cherished spending time with his family, swimming and chocolate.

He is survived by Frances M. McCormick of Wilmington; his children, John L. Highberger, Jr. of Wilmington; Mary L. Hultberg (Kevin) of Wilmington; Daniel B. Highberger (Mary) of Wilmington; and Becky Laskowski (Fred) of Bear; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and brother Paul Highberger (Judy) of Fairfax, VA.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 am on Thursday September 21, 2017 at the CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike. Friends and family may visit Wednesday night from 6 to 8 pm and again on Thursday morning from 10 to 11 am at the funeral home.
