Kenneth Emil Trelenberg, age 92, of Wilmington Delaware, formerly of Romulus, Michigan died peacefully at home surrounded by family on August 1, 2017.

Ken was born in 1925 in Detroit, the son of Emil and Emma Trelenberg. He had four siblings including a twin sister. Ken grew up on the family farm in Romulus just outside of Detroit. He graduated first in his class from Romulus High School, and attended Central Michigan University and the University of Wisconsin – Madison, graduating in 1948 with a Masters degree in Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering. He was an ensign in the US Navy, having graduated from the Navy V-12 program while attending the University of Wisconsin. He served proudly on the USS Denver, achieving the rank of Lieutenant JG, and was honorably discharged from the Navy to begin his civilian life.

Ken was a lifelong employee of the DuPont Company, starting his career in Wilmington, Delaware in 1949 at the Experimental Station, working in the Textile Fibers Division. His career took him first to Chattanooga, Tennessee. It was there that he settled down with his first wife Elizabeth W. Trelenberg, and their daughter Ann and son Peter were born. Ken later relocated his young family to Seaford, Delaware where he worked at "the nylon plant". In the early 1960's the family relocated for the last time to Wilmington. During the 1960's Ken travelled frequently for DuPont to Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay, and during the 1970's worked for DuPont in Taiwan and Coral Gables, Florida. He remarried in 1981 to Shien Hwa Trelenberg and they have one daughter, Amy. Ken was a stay at home father to his daughter thanks to early retirement from Du Pont in 1986.

Ken was an active member of his community, serving on his local civic associations over the years. He also held various positions within his church community at Concordia Lutheran Church. He volunteered as a medical appointment driver for the elderly for many years. He was a member of a local bowling team and spent many hours with close friends on the golf course at the Du Pont Country Club. His love of golf knew no bounds; he even had day glow golf balls for play in the snow. Having grown up on the family farm he was a farmer, gardener and mechanic at heart. He could always be found outside with his hands in the dirt, or in the garage fixing something. He was kind and generous to his friends and neighbors and became something of a local handyman, crafting shelves, desks, tables, and other furniture in his garage workshop.

Ken is survived by his first wife Elizabeth and his widow Shien Hwa. He is also survived by his three children: Ann E. Walker (Jackson) of Wilmington DE, Peter W. Trelenberg (Susan) of Dallas, TX and Amy Kanzleiter (John) of Kennett Square, PA. He has 6 loving grandchildren: Christopher, Andrew, and Daniel Motter, and Leigh Anna Azzalino (Cory), Peter Jr. and Erik Trelenberg. His brother and three sisters all predeceased him.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday August 7, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3003 Silverside Rd. Wilmington, DE 19810. A viewing will be held at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment will be private the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
