Helen Scott Tharp Obituary

Helen Scott Tharp departed this life peacefully from her home during the late evening on Friday, November 2, 2007, at the age of 96.

Helen was born on August 2, 1911. She was the only child of the late Frank L. and Ida S. Scott. She was a lifelong Wilmingtonian. She earned her RN from the Delaware Hospital School of Nursing in 1930. Before that, she was a 1928 graduate of Wilmington High School. She loved her church, the Cathedral Church of St. John in Wilmington. She served multiple terms on the Cathedral's vestry and was elected as its 1st president in 1960. She was the founder of the St. John Next-to-New Shop which has been in operation for more than 45 years. Helen will be remembered for her strong personality and will, but mostly as a devoted mother and grandmother. In 1979, after the untimely death of her daughter, Helen embraced the responsibility of parenthood for a second term, as she dutifully took guardianship of the 3 young children that were left behind.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Bill in 1978, after 47 years of marriage and her daughter, Joyce C. Lucas. She is survived by her son, Scott Tharp and his wife Tina of Phoenixville, PA. In addition, Helen is survived by 4 grandchildren, William F. Lucas of Wilmington, DE, David M. Lucas, Lee R. Lucas and her husband, Jeff Brzezicki, all of Springfield, PA and Lindsay A. Vick and her husband, Jason of Newark, DE. She is also survived by 2 great-grandchildren, Gracie Joy and Sofia Hope Brzezicki; and a step grandchild, Alysia Nicole Vick.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are considered to one of the following: the Cathedral Church of St. John (address above); Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education, 4842 Ridge Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19129; or the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, 3601 S.
