James M. Mulligan, Jr., age 76, of Wilmington, Delaware, died peacefully at Wilmington Hospital on Saturday August 22 comforted during his last hours by family, including his loving wife, Shirley. Jim was an exceptional husband, father, grandfather, brother and person.

Jim was born in Wilmington in 1932, and was a proud 1950 graduate of Archmere Academy, where he was awarded alumnus of the year in 1979. Jim was equally proud of his beloved Hawks of St. Joseph's University, from where he graduated summa cum laude in 1954. Jim became an accomplished left handed pitcher for the Hawks' baseball team and amassed an excellent win loss record during his four years there. Jim was a lifelong loyal fan of his favorite Philadelphia Phillies. Jim listened to and/or watched almost every game for decades.

After Saint Joe's, Jim was an Owens Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania Law School where he graduated in 1957. He joined Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz in 1964, and was a partner of the law firm for over 40 years. Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz became a second home to Jim. He continued working for the firm until shortly before his death. During his more than 50 year career, Jim's superior writing skills and intellect were unmatched. Jim was a dean of the bar, and among his many awards received the Daniel L. Herrmann Professional Conduct Award from the Delaware State Bar Association, which recognized his outstanding civility, courtesy, and ability.

Jim was predeceased by his first wife, Caroline Butler Mulligan. Jim is survived by his wife of 21 years, Shirley Morrin Mulligan; sister Nancy Mulligan of Washington, D.C.; son James M. Mulligan III and his wife Katherine L. Mulligan of Dublin, Ohio; daughter Theresa Grillo and her husband Vincent Grillo of Melbourne, Florida; daughter Claire Hill and her husband Karl Hill of Newark, Delaware; son Joseph Mulligan and his wife Jennifer Frank of Bloomfield, New Jersey; grandchildren Michael Grillo, Kurt Hill, and Kevin Hill; stepson Thomas Morrin and his wife Theresa Morrin of Hockessin, Delaware; stepdaughter Maureen Morrin and her husband Michel Lemay of Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania; and stepgrandchildren Danielle Morrin, Gregory Morrin, and Amelie Lemay. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Saint Joseph's University, 5600 City Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19131, Attention: Class of 1954 - James M. Mulligan, Jr. Scholarship Fund.
