James William Short, age 85, passed away on March 25 at his home in Rehoboth Beach surrounded by his family following a brief illness. Jim, the youngest son of Clarence and Catherine McMahon Short, was born and raised in Wilmington and remained a life-long Delawarean. He attended St. Paul’s School and Brown Vocational School. Shortly before his high school graduation and after the attack on Pearl Harbor, he joined the United States Navy on December 30, 1942. During his active duty, he was involved in the Omaha and Normandy beach invasions on D-Day and was honorably discharged on November 12, 1945. In 2000, Jim was awarded his high school diploma, along with other WWII veterans, by Governor Ruth Ann Minner.
Jim was happy “on the water” in his boat and was an avid fisherman for many years. He was affectionately known as “Big Jim” and was a gracious host; “the more the merrier” was his motto. He was not only a loving father to his own children and grandchildren, but also to his many nieces, nephews, and his children’s friends who always felt welcome in his home. His driveway frequently resembled a parking lot, once even to a coach bus full of the Padua volleyball team.
Jim retired from Steamfitters Local #80 (now the Pipefitters and Plumbers Local #74) in October 1989 where he was initiated since January 19, 1946. Following his retirement and move to Rehoboth Beach, he started a contracting business. Jim was active in a number of organizations throughout Delaware including the Claymont Anglers and Sportsmen Association, the Prince of Piedmont Lodge #475, the American Legion Post 5, a life-time member of the VFW Post 7447, a life-time member of the Defiance Athletic Association, and a charter member of Cape Henlopen Elks Lodge #2540.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Caroline Mairs Short, his daughters, Lynn Iorii, Nancy Durney, and Cynde Andress, son Jim Short, Jr., son-in-laws Anthony Iorii and Phil Durney and Steve Ademski, grandchildren, Michael Iorii and Juliet, Brian Andress and Lisa, Jamie Thomas and Clint, Karie and Kristin Eastburn , Nicole Durney, Michelle Iorii, and Philip Durney III, Casey and Courtney Ademski, and great-grandchildren Isabella, Sophia, Scarlett, Lilly, and Piper.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved daughter, Sherri Short Eastburn, his infant son, Thomas Mairs Short, and two brothers, Clarence Short and Francis Short. Jim will be missed not only by his family that he adored, but by his friends who knew he “did it his way”.
Visitation will be at Chandler’s Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE on Monday, March 29, from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend Jim’s celebration of life at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 30, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. Burial will follow at Gracelawn Cemetary.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Jim’s memory be sent to VFW Post 7447, 101 State Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
